Mechanical or thermostatic shower column?
A mechanical shower column is the simplest and the cheapest: one lever, and you blend the hot and the cold yourself. A thermostatic shower column keeps the temperature you chose, even when someone opens another tap: it is the comfort to favour in a family bathroom. Between the two, the choice comes down to budget and use, and the mechanical shower column remains a good choice for a spare shower room.
How does a shower mixer work?
The mixer blends the hot and cold water before sending it to the overhead shower head or the handset. A mechanical mixer has a single lever: you turn it for the temperature and lift it for the flow. A thermostatic mixer has two controls, one for the temperature, the other for the flow, and it corrects the mix continuously to hold the chosen temperature. On a column, a diverter then sends the water to the overhead shower head or to the handset.
What are the different types of shower mixer?
- The mechanical mixer, simple and economical, on most of the columns in the selection.
- The thermostatic mixer, which holds the temperature: four columns in this selection advertise it.
- The bath shower mixer, which also feeds a bath spout.
- The concealed mixer, whose body is housed in the wall.
If you prefer to keep your current mixer, a shower column without mixer connects to it and only changes the upper part.
Fitting a shower column with mixer
A wall-mounted column with mixer is fitted on the two water supplies coming out of the wall. Turn off the water, remove the old mixer, change the seals, screw on the column's mixer, then fix the rail to the wall and fit the overhead shower head. Concealed columns mean opening the wall: leave them to a plumber.
Frequently asked questions about shower columns with mixer
Are shower mixers standard?
Most wall-mounted mixers connect to two water supplies with eccentric connectors, which make up for a small gap between the pipes. Measure the gap between your supplies anyway before ordering a shower column with mixer.
How long does a shower mixer last?
It depends mainly on water hardness and on the care given to the cartridge, more than on price. We go through it in our article on how long a mixer tap lasts.
What is the drawback of a thermostatic shower mixer?
It costs a little more than a mechanical mixer and its cartridge is sensitive to limescale. In return, the temperature no longer moves during the shower.
Shower column with or without mixer?
With a mixer if yours is old, leaks or sets the temperature badly: you change everything at once. Without a mixer if yours works well and you only want a bigger shower head or a new handset. All the models, with or without a mixer, can be compared in our full selection of shower columns.
