How does a shower column without a mixer work?
The column without a mixer has no mixer of its own: it receives the water already blended by your tap or shower mixer, through a hose or a connector, then distributes it between the overhead rain and the handset. It therefore suits you when your mixer works well and you only want to modernise the shower. If your mixer leaks or sets the temperature badly, a complete column with its mixer, thermostatic or mechanical, is better.
What are the different types of shower column?
- The column without a mixer, which connects to an existing mixer.
- The column with a mechanical mixer, with a single lever for flow and temperature.
- The thermostatic column, which holds the chosen temperature.
- The concealed column, whose body is hidden in the wall.
- The hydromassage column, with massage jets as well.
- The bath column, with a spout that fills the bath: see our bath column.
These six families are gathered in our shower columns of every type.
If you are redoing the wall, a concealed shower column hides the body of the tapware: only the faceplate and the shower head remain visible.
Fitting a shower column without a mixer
Fix the rail to the wall above your existing mixer, then connect the column to the mixer outlet. Before drilling, decide the height of the overhead shower head and the rail: our article on the installation height of a shower column gives the benchmarks. Change the seals at every connection and turn the water on slowly to check that none leaks.
Frequently asked questions about shower columns without a mixer
Can a shower column without a mixer be fitted to any mixer?
On most wall-mounted shower mixers, yes, since the column connects to the mixer outlet. Check that there is enough height between the mixer and the ceiling for the rail and the overhead shower head.
What is the average lifespan of a shower column?
It depends mainly on water hardness and upkeep. Without a mixer, the column has fewer parts that wear: it is the seals and the handset hose that get changed first. Regular descaling of the nozzles keeps the flow up.
Thermostatic or mechanical shower column?
It is not the column without a mixer that decides: it is your mixer. With a thermostatic mixer, the temperature stays stable; with a mechanical mixer, it moves when the pressure varies in the house.
Can you have a shower without a wall water supply?
A shower column always needs a water supply, hot and cold, and a drain. A column without a mixer connects to the existing mixer: it is the mixer that receives the water.
