Decorative outdoor taps

Which outdoor tap should you choose?
- For simple use, a single hose: a single-outlet wall-mounted tap, from €19.90.
- For two hoses or a timer: a double-outlet model, from €18.90.
- In a region where it freezes: a frost-proof tap, and the hose disconnected in winter, the most effective way to protect the tap.
- For a water point away from the wall: the Freestanding Frost-Proof Outdoor Tap, at €19.90.
- For the washing machine: one of the two models designed for this use, in a utility room as on a covered terrace.
- For an installation without a plumber: a like-for-like replacement, on an existing water supply, switched off beforehand.

Two points to check before ordering: the diameter of the water supply (1/2 or 3/4 inch most often) and the use of the water. Several product pages state that the tap is not intended for drinking water.
Brass, stainless steel or zinc: the material of an outdoor tap
An outdoor tap faces rain, sun and frost: it needs a corrosion-resistant metal that withstands rust and oxidation. Depending on the model, the product pages state brass, 304 stainless steel or a zinc alloy. Trust the product page more than the name: the dragon model and the chiselled model, presented as "in brass", are in zinc alloy according to their product page. Installing an outdoor tap
For easy use, put the tap where you need it: near the terrace for cleaning, the vegetable patch for watering, the drive for washing the car, connecting a pressure washer or filling above-ground pools in summer. An outdoor tap is fitted on an existing water supply or on a new branch from the home's pipework.

1. Turn off the water at the meter or the valve that supplies the water point: with the water off, the pipes drain through the open tap. 2. Remove the old tap with a spanner, holding the wall connector. 3. Clean the thread and wrap it in PTFE tape or hemp. 4. Screw on the new tap, outlet pointing downwards, then tighten without forcing. 5. Turn the water back on and check the seal: your installation is ready.
The tools: an adjustable spanner, PTFE tape, and a drill if the tap fixes onto a wall plate. For a new water outlet through the wall, with a branch from the pipework and an isolation valve on the house side, a plumber will do a complete, effective job. For a simple replacement on an existing supply, installation is easy and generally takes under an hour.
Leaking outdoor tap: repair or replacement
The complete kit for a small repair: a seal, PTFE tape, a spanner. A leak at the connection is often fixed by redoing the thread seal. A leak at the spout, with the tap closed, comes from the seal or the head: repairing it means changing the seal. If the body is cracked, often after a freezing winter, replacing the tap is the only solution. A new tap from the selection costs from €18.90 to €67.90.
Outdoor taps in winter
Winter is the season when outdoor pipes suffer most. An outdoor tap that isn't frost-proof keeps water in its body: when it freezes, it can crack it. Should you turn off the outdoor tap in winter? Yes: from November, or before the first frosts, disconnect the hose, close the internal isolation valve if there is one, shut off on the house side, then open the tap to drain the pipe.
