How can I tell if my shower head is water-saving?
The simplest way is to measure the flow rate. Turn the shower on full over a 10-litre graduated bucket and time how long it takes to fill. The calculation is straightforward: if the bucket fills in 60 seconds, your flow rate is 10 litres per minute; if it takes 90 seconds, it is about 6.7 litres per minute. Repeat the same measurement with the new shower head, under the same conditions: you will have a real comparison, made with the water pressure of your own installation.
Keep in mind that a shower head does not change the mains pressure. A high-pressure shower head concentrates the water so that the jet stays dense at a lower flow rate: this is what lets you cut consumption without having a weak shower. Cutting your water use in the shower
The shower head is one lever, not the only one. Water-saving taps and shower heads help, but water savings are also made in everyday habits. Your water use depends on two figures you can find out: the flow rate measured with the bucket, and the time spent in the shower. Multiply one by the other and you have the volume of water for a shower.
- Shorten your shower: a minute or two less counts as much as changing the shower head.
- Turn off the water while soaping: a handset with a stop button makes this possible without upsetting the temperature on the mixer.
- Set the temperature once: a thermostatic mixer avoids letting the water run while you find the right temperature.
- Save by choosing the right shower head: a quality shower head with a dense jet lets you lower the flow rate without losing comfort.
- Descale the shower head: nozzles blocked by limescale give an uneven jet that makes you open the mixer further.
Saving hot water pays off twice. Less hot water used also means less energy to heat it: the saving shows on the water bill as on the energy bill, in proportions that only your own measurement can put a figure on.
Fitting a water-saving shower head
Changing a shower head takes a few minutes and needs no tools: turn off the water, unscrew the old shower head by hand, check that the washer is in place in the hose nut, screw on the new one without forcing it, then turn the water on and check the connection. It depends on your flow rate. With a flow rate measured at 10 litres per minute, a 10-minute shower uses 100 litres; at 6.7 litres per minute, about 67 litres. Measure your flow rate, then multiply by the length.
