Which finish for a kitchen mixer tap?
- Matt black: it suits modern and industrial kitchens. See our selection of black kitchen mixer taps.
- Brushed stainless steel: it shows marks less than polished chrome; our stainless steel mixer tap start at €39.90.
- White: rare and bright, with light cabinet fronts. See the white kitchen mixer tap, including the White swivel kitchen tap with two-mode pull-out spray at €65.90.
- Gold and aged brass: for a warm kitchen, like the Aged brass kitchen tap with swivel U-spout (€114.90). See our gold kitchen taps.
- Retro: antique bronze, aged brass, old-fashioned style, like the Antique Bronze Kitchen Tap (€79.90) or the Vintage Pull-Out Kitchen Mixer Tap (€129.90). See our retro kitchen mixer tap.
High-end kitchen mixer tap: what makes the difference
For high-end kitchen tapware, look at the body (brass, 304 stainless steel according to the sheets), the cartridge, the finish and the quality of the spray rather than the price alone. For design, straight lines and square or U-shaped spouts, like the Tall kitchen tap with slim angled spout (€163.90 to €179.90), give a designer kitchen mixer tap that stands out. For a luxury tap in a carefully designed kitchen, a gold finish or aged brass makes the difference.
Which kitchen mixer tap should you choose?
- For a small budget: the models from €39.90 to €49.90.
- For everyday washing-up: a mixer tap with pull-out spray, with two sprays.
- For a double sink: a swivel spout.
- For a sink under a window: a fold-down or wall-mounted model.
- For large saucepans: a high or U-shaped spout.
Also check the number of holes in your sink: a mixer tap fits on a single hole. Our guide how to choose your mixer tap according to the sink compares the models according to the size and shape of the bowl. As for the connection, the sheet for 43 of the 60 mixer taps states 1/2-inch, and that of 5 models 3/8.
Replacing a kitchen mixer tap
Turn off the water under the sink, open the mixer tap to release the pressure, unscrew the hoses and then the fixing nut under the sink. Fit the new seal, tighten the nut, connect the hot and cold water hoses, then turn the water back on gently and check there are no leaks. Our article on replacing a kitchen mixer tap yourself goes through the tools and the time to allow. If the old mixer tap is stubborn, taking a kitchen mixer tap apart step by step has its own guide.
Frequently asked questions about kitchen mixer taps
What is the difference between a mixer tap and a pillar tap?
A mixer tap controls temperature and flow with a single lever. A two-handle tap has two controls, one for hot water and one for cold.
Which kitchen mixer tap should you choose for a single-hole sink?
Any single-lever mixer tap: it fits on a single hole. Models with two cross handles or separate controls need two holes.
Mixer tap or tap with pull-out spray?
A mixer tap with a pull-out spray does both: it adjusts the water with one lever and its spray rinses where you need it.
Do you need to turn off the water to change a mixer tap?
Yes. Close the isolation valves under the sink, or failing that the main supply, then open the mixer tap to release the pressure before unscrewing the hoses.
What should I do if my kitchen mixer tap leaks?
First look at where the water comes out. From the spout with the lever closed, it is most often the cartridge; at the base of the mixer tap, a seal; under the sink, a hose or its connection. Our article leaking or dripping mixer tap helps you find the leak and decide between repairing and replacing.
How can you tell if a mixer tap is faulty?
A drip that carries on with the lever closed, a lever that is stiff or turns without effect, a temperature that changes by itself: these are the most common signs. Our article on the signs of a faulty mixer tap goes through them one by one.
