Tap or mixer: what's the difference?

The two-handle mixing tap has two controls, one for hot water and one for cold: you blend by hand. The single-lever mixer has just one control, which sets both temperature and flow. The thermostatic mixer goes further by holding the temperature on its own. In everyday speech, people often say shower tap for all three. We explain these differences in the article two-handle or single-lever mixer: what changes.

To compare shower, bath and basin mixers, see the page bathroom mixer taps.

Before buying: centre distance, outlets and height

A wall-mounted shower tap connects to two water supplies. Measure the centre distance, that is the gap between their centres: the eccentric connectors, which link the tap to the supplies, make up for a small offset, not a large one. Then check the number of outlets: one downward outlet for a hose and a handset, or one outlet to a spout and one to the handset for a bath shower tap. Finally, look at the height: a shower tap is fitted at hand height, below the handset holder. The heights of the tap, shower head and handset are detailed in our article on the height of the shower tap.

How do I change my shower tap?

  • Turn off the water and open the tap to drain the pipes.
  • Unscrew the hose, then the tap's two nuts on the wall connectors.
  • Check the eccentric connectors and change the seals.
  • Fit the new tap straight, tighten without forcing, turn the water back on and check every connection.

A concealed tap means opening up the wall: in that case, call a plumber. For a wall-mounted tap, our step-by-step guide explains how to change a shower tap whether or not you keep the eccentric connectors.

Frequently asked questions about the shower tap

How much does a shower mixer cost?

In this selection, from €49.90 for a simple wall-mounted shower tap to €253.90 for a complete set with handset and rail. A thermostatic shower mixer starts at €64.90.

What are the disadvantages of a mixer tap with a pull-out spray?

A handheld shower needs a solid holder and a hose in good condition, otherwise it hangs loose or leaks at the connection. On a bath shower mixer, the diverter that sends water to the spout or to the handset is one more part to maintain.

How long does a shower tap last?

It depends mainly on water hardness and upkeep. A dripping tap doesn't necessarily need replacing: the cartridge or seals can often be changed on their own.

What should I do if the shower tap leaks?

Turn off the water, then see where it comes from. A leak at the spout or handset, with the tap closed, most often comes from the cartridge of a mixer or the seal of a two-handle tap. A leak at the wall connectors comes from the seals of the eccentric connectors, which can be replaced. Our guide on the leaking shower tap covers each case.

Which shower tap brand should I choose?

Rather than a brand, look at the type of control (thermostatic or not), the finish and the compatibility with your water supplies. These three points make a good everyday choice.

To complete your bathroom

For a selection focused on mixers, go to the collection shower mixer. To fit out the rest of the room, see our taps for bathroom tap, for basin tap and bath tap. And for the end of the line, a shower hose is changed at the same time as the tap.
