Wall-mounted outdoor tap: how to choose for the garden and the front of the house

32 wall-mounted outdoor taps, from €18.90 to €64.90

A wall-mounted outdoor tap is fixed to the wall of the house, the garage or a garden wall to give you a water point outside, as close as possible to where you water plants, the terrace or the car to wash. It is practical equipment, almost essential as soon as you have outdoor space. This selection of outdoor taps brings together 32 wall-mounted models. Half cost €29.90 or less, from the 304 stainless steel double-outlet garden tap with lever at €18.90 up to the Antique brass double-outlet garden tap with cross handles at €64.90. As for finish, gold comes first (12 models offer it), ahead of chrome (10) and black (9), with blue, red, green and brown too for the coloured models.

Where should you install a wall-mounted outdoor tap?

The right spot is where you use the water, not necessarily where the pipe runs. A few cases come up often:

  • On the front, near the terrace: for cleaning the floor, watering pots, rinsing the garden furniture. The tap is visible, so the finish matters.
  • At the bottom of the garden or near the vegetable patch: on a low wall or a shed, it saves dragging a hose the whole length of the plot.
  • On the garage wall: to wash the car, the bike or tools without going through the house.
  • Above an outdoor sink or in a summer kitchen: a wall-mounted tap frees up the worktop and is easy to clean.

In every case, adapt the choice to conditions on site: exposure to frost, sun, rain. Allow a height that lets a bucket or watering can fit under the spout, and a surface that can take splashes: paving slab, gravel or tray.

The classic single-outlet wall-mounted outdoor tap

To water a flower bed, fill a watering can or connect a hose, a single-outlet bib tap is enough. It is the simplest type of tap, the easiest to fit, and often the cheapest in the selection:

  • the Chrome outdoor garden tap, €19.90, in two models A and B;
  • the Outdoor tap, €19.90, in gold finish, available in 1/2 or 3/4;
  • the Outdoor garden tap, €24.90, in green, blue, red or brown, also in 1/2 or 3/4: this is the model that offers the most colours;
  • the Wall-mounted garden tap in chrome, the Wall-mounted outside tap in black and the Wall-mounted outdoor tap in blue, all three at €24.90;
  • the Chrome wall-mounted outside tap, €29.90, in two models A and B.

A single-outlet tap suits most uses in a small garden or terrace: a single hose permanently connected, or a watering can filled as needed.

The double-outlet tap, for two hoses

A double outlet lets you keep the garden hose connected and use the second for another hose or a watering can. It's handy in a large garden, or when washing the car while the watering is running. Six models advertise it, and their product pages give the valve details:

  • the 304 stainless steel double-outlet garden tap with lever, €18.90, in stainless steel according to its product page, polished finish, modern style, with a ceramic disc valve and installation hardware supplied;
  • the Brass double-outlet garden tap, 1/2 and 3/4 inch, €25.90, classic style, ball valve, installation hardware supplied;
  • the 304 stainless steel garden tap with quarter-turn lever, €29.90, brushed finish, ball valve and double outlet;
  • the Black double-outlet garden tap with lever handle, €35.90, contemporary style, disc valve;
  • the Black double-outlet garden tap, PTFE tape included, €39.90, brushed finish, ball valve, supplied with its PTFE tape;
  • the Antique brass double-outlet garden tap with cross handles, €64.90, antique style, ball valve, with an aerator among the accessories.

All these product pages state wall mounting, and five of the six list a universal thread for Europe and America.

Decorative and design outdoor tap for the front of the house

When the tap is fixed beside the front door or on a terrace, it is as visible as a lantern. Several models focus on shape more than function:

  • Dragon motif: the Contemporary wall-mounted outdoor tap, €24.90, in gold, whose body takes the shape of a dragon, and the Carved brass garden tap with dragon design, from €29.90 to €34.90 in aged brass, copper bronze, gold or brushed stainless steel, with a compression valve.
  • Traditional style: the Antique wall-mounted garden tap, €34.90, and the Antique brass garden tap with cross handle, long or short spout, €39.90, with a ball valve and a deck plate among the accessories. The long spout keeps water away from the wall, the short spout stays more discreet.
  • Modern lines: the Designer outdoor tap, €29.90 in black, chrome or gold, the Black wall-mounted garden tap, €29.90, and the Wall-mounted outdoor garden tap, from €29.90 to €34.90 in chrome or black, large or small.
  • Gold finish: the Gold wall-mounted garden tap, €34.90, the Outdoor garden wall tap, €34.90 in black or gold, and the Brass wall-mounted outdoor tap, €34.90 in black, chrome or gold.

An original outdoor tap dresses a bare wall and becomes a real decorative detail; a plain chrome or black model, on the other hand, blends into a modern front. To choose, look at the colour of the window frames, light fittings and letterboxes already fixed to the wall: a finish that echoes one of them fits in better than an isolated colour.

The frost-proof outdoor tap

In regions where it freezes, for a water point that stays outside all winter, look at the frost-proof outdoor tap. Five models on this page are presented on their product pages as protecting the installation against frost:

  • the Modern frost-proof outdoor tap, from €19.90 to €24.90 in gold or chrome;
  • the Antique-style frost-proof outdoor tap, €19.90, in traditional style;
  • the Black frost-proof outdoor tap, €24.90, with one or two spouts;
  • the Designer frost-proof outdoor tap, from €24.90 to €29.90 in blue or red;
  • the Brass frost-proof outdoor tap, €29.90.

The principle of a frost-proof tap is to shut the water off as far as possible from the cold, so that the part left outside empties when you close it. Even with a frost-proof model, disconnect the garden hose before winter: a hose left screwed on keeps water in the tap.

Bib tap: the technical name for the outdoor tap

In plumbing, an outdoor tap with a cold water supply is called a bib tap. The spout is often threaded to connect a garden hose directly with a quick connector. Bib taps differ by their control (lever handle, round handle or cross head), by the diameter of their connection to the pipe and by their finish. All the models on this page are wall-mounted bib taps: they screw onto a water outlet that goes through the wall, with or without a fixing bracket.

The advantages of a wall-mounted tap

  • A water point where you need it, without carrying buckets from the kitchen or bathroom.
  • Simple, easy use: you open it, fill up, close it, without unrolling fifty metres of hose.
  • Discreet installation: fixed to the wall, the tap doesn't get in the way and stays safe from knocks by the lawnmower.
  • Spread-out water supply: on a large plot, two well-placed garden taps are better than one overlong hose, which loses pressure and wears out faster.

Which wall-mounted outdoor tap should you choose?

To choose well, start from your need, then the connection, the valve and the finish.

To compare the options by watering, cleaning or garden use, our guide on choosing an outdoor tap presents the different models available.

By use

  • For watering only: a single-outlet model, in 1/2 or 3/4 depending on your hose fittings. This is the best choice for a small garden.
  • For two hoses or a watering can alongside the hose: a double-outlet tap.
  • For a tap visible on the front or terrace: a decorative model, dragon, traditional or gold.
  • For a harsh winter: a frost-proof model.
  • For an outdoor sink or a summer kitchen: a wall-mounted tap above the sink frees up the worktop. No product page on this page lists a hot water supply: these are cold-water taps, and for hot and cold water you need a mixer tap.

By valve type

The product pages cite three systems. The ball valve opens and closes with a quarter turn of the lever: you see at a glance whether the water is on, and it is easy to operate even with gloves. The disc valve is also operated by a lever. The compression valve is the system of the traditional cross-head tap: you turn the handle through several turns to set the flow.

By connection

1/2 and 3/4 refer to the diameter of the thread that screws onto the pipe. Check the one on your water supply before ordering: several models come in both sizes, like the Outdoor tap and the Outdoor garden tap, and the Brass double-outlet garden tap, 1/2 and 3/4 inch states it in its name.

By material and finish

The product pages cite brass, stainless steel (304 stainless in the title of two models) and zinc alloy. Stainless steel suits a modern front well, aged brass a traditional style. For colour, chrome and black go with a modern front, gold and aged brass with a house with character or a country garden. For a model whose product page states a brass body, in the garden as in the house, see our brass taps. Those that fit outdoors, wall-mounted, frost-proof or double-outlet, also have their page: our selection of brass outdoor tap brings together nine.

By budget

  • Up to €19.90 (5 models): the 304 stainless steel double-outlet garden tap with lever at €18.90, then at €19.90 the Chrome outdoor garden tap, the Outdoor tap, the Antique-style frost-proof outdoor tap and the starting price of the Modern frost-proof outdoor tap.
  • From €24.90 to €29.90 (19 models): most of the selection, including the coloured single-outlet taps, the Brass double-outlet garden tap, 1/2 and 3/4 inch at €25.90 and the 304 stainless steel garden tap with quarter-turn lever at €29.90.
  • From €34.90 (8 models): mostly gold finishes and double-outlet models, from the Gold wall-mounted garden tap at €34.90 to the Antique brass garden tap with cross handle, long or short spout at €39.90, up to the Antique brass double-outlet garden tap with cross handles at €64.90.

The price gap comes mainly from style, finish and the number of outlets: for a utility tap at the bottom of the garden, a plain model does the same job as a sculpted one.

One outlet or two: how to decide

The question arises mainly when the tap is the only water point in the garden. With a single outlet, every use goes through the same connection: you disconnect the garden hose to fill a watering can or connect a pressure washer, then reconnect it. With two outlets, the hose stays in place on one, the other stays free for a bucket, a second hose or drip irrigation. If the tap is mainly used to fill a watering can for a few pots on the terrace, one outlet is enough and gives you more finishes to choose from. If a garden hose is connected all summer, the double outlet saves the back and forth. In this selection, the six double-outlet models range from €18.90 to €64.90.

1/2 or 3/4 connector: what the product pages say

The diameter of the tap's connector must match that of the water outlet on the wall. Three models on the page give this information: the Outdoor tap and the Outdoor garden tap are ordered in 1/2 or 3/4, and the Brass double-outlet garden tap, 1/2 and 3/4 inch states it in its name. For the others, the product page doesn't give the diameter: measure the thread of your water outlet or take the old tap to a hardware shop to compare before ordering. A plumbing adapter lets you switch from one to the other if needed.

Installing a wall-fixed tap

Installation is simple if the water supply already goes through the wall. If not, you first have to create a water outlet, which is a plumbing job.

1. Turn off the water at the isolation valve and open a tap in the house to drain the pipe. 2. Wrap the thread in PTFE tape, in the direction of screwing, to ensure a seal. 3. Screw the tap onto the outlet until the spout points downwards, then fix it to the wall if the model has a bracket. 4. Turn the water back on and check that no connection leaks, with the tap closed then open.

Several product pages list the installation hardware among the included accessories, and the Black double-outlet garden tap, PTFE tape included comes with its PTFE tape. If plumbing seems tricky, or if the wall needs drilling to bring in a new water supply, a plumber will do the installation quickly and fit an isolation valve inside.

Useful accessories around the tap

A wall-mounted outdoor tap becomes more practical with a few common watering accessories: a quick connector screwed onto the outlet to attach and detach the hose in a second, a hose reel fixed alongside to store the garden hose, a spray gun to adjust the jet, or a timer to water at set times. On a double-outlet tap, each outlet can take its own connector.

Upkeep: cleaning and frost protection

A tap outdoors stays exposed to the weather, sun, rain and frost. A few upkeep tips are enough to keep it easy to use:

  • Remove limescale: with white vinegar, from time to time, to keep a good flow and a clean finish.
  • Check the connections: tighten them as soon as a drop appears, to avoid wasting water all summer.
  • Clean the thread: soil and dust lodge in it, a brush stroke makes screwing on the connector easier.
  • Before frost: without a frost-proof system, close the internal isolation valve in autumn, disconnect the hose, then open the tap to drain the remaining water. This is essential to stop it freezing and cracking in winter.
  • In spring: reopen the internal isolation valve, let the water run for a few seconds, then check the connection and the thread before reconnecting the garden hose. A wall-mounted outdoor tap that has spent the winter outside should be checked with the tap closed then open: not a drop should bead on the wall.

Replacing a leaking outdoor tap

An outdoor tap that drips when closed often has a worn washer or cartridge; a leak at the wall is more likely from the thread. In the first case, a wear part can be changed; in the second, you need to unscrew the tap, redo the PTFE tape and refit it. When the tap is old, seized or cracked by frost, the most effective thing is to replace it: most models on this page fit in a few minutes on an existing outlet, as long as you choose the right connection diameter. Fit the new tap spout downwards, test it with cold water with the tap closed then open, and you can check straight away that there is no leak. For the full replacement, our article on replacing a wall-mounted outdoor tap goes through each step.

Frequently asked questions about the wall-mounted outdoor tap

What is the best outdoor tap?

The one that suits your use and climate. For a simple watering point, a single-outlet bib tap will do; to connect two hoses, take a double outlet; where it freezes, a frost-proof model. Then look at the connection (1/2 or 3/4), the type of valve and the finish that will go with your wall.

How do you set up an outdoor tap?

Place it at hand height, above a surface that can take water: paving slab, gravel or tray. A hose reel next to it for the garden hose, a quick connector on the outlet, and the water point becomes practical day to day. On a visible front, a decorative outdoor tap, in a gold finish or with a dragon motif, is chosen like a decorative element.

How do you make an outdoor water outlet?

You need a water supply that goes through the wall to the outside, an isolation valve on the inside so you can cut the water in winter, then the wall-mounted tap on the outlet. Most often, an outdoor tap connects to cold water: a single supply, an easier installation.

How do you get an outdoor tap installed?

If the pipe already reaches the wall, fitting stays easy: fixing to the wall, connecting the thread with PTFE tape, leak test. If the wall has to be drilled and a new water supply run in, call a plumber, who will also know how to fit an isolation valve.

Outdoor tap or garden tap: what's the difference?

None in substance: both names refer to a cold-water tap installed outside, in the same conditions of use. We tend to say garden tap for watering, outdoor tap for a water point on the front or the garage. All the models on this page fix to the wall.
