The shape of an original garden tap

The shape of an original garden tap

T-shaped cross handle on top, angled body, ribbed tip screwed on at the outlet: this is the design of the garden tap you have seen for decades on house fronts, here in gilded brass, with no paint or plastic.

It replaces a scaled-up or seized old tap without surprises: same look, same use, same connection. For a country house, a vegetable garden or a boundary wall, it is the choice that doesn't look out of place and that everyone knows how to use first time, from children to grandparents.

A thick body and clean threads

A thick body and clean threads

The supplier's thumbnails emphasise the thickness of the valve body and the crispness of the threads. The angled body moves the outlet away from the wall, leaving room to slip a hand in and tighten a clip on the hose without scraping your fingers on the render.

The cross handle turns by full hand; its two arms give enough grip to open or close without tools, even after months of disuse. A tap with no electronics or complicated mechanism, which can be repaired with parts from any hardware shop.

Connection, hose and the cold season

Connection, hose and the cold season

The 1/2″ male inlet screws into a 15x21 female connector; a well-tensioned turn of PTFE tape on the thread prevents leaks. At the outlet, the garden hose pushes onto the ribbed tip, held by its nut, and is secured with a clip.

When winter comes, shut off the water at the interior valve, open the cross handle to drain the tap, then remove the hose. A tap left full of water can crack in the frost; emptied and left open, it waits quietly for spring. On restarting, open the supply gently and check that no drop forms at the thread.

What makes the difference

Receiving just the one part, and having to order the rest elsewhere.

Our answer
  • 1 brass outdoor tap with ribbed spout

A zamak body with a simple chrome plating: the finish flakes off and the metal pits underneath.

Our answer

A brass body, the benchmark material for taps: it does not rust and withstands hot water without warping.

Finding out at installation that the drilling does not match.

Our answer

The installation type is stated on the product page before you buy, here wall-mounted.

+33 7 56 88 18 90 Write to us
Is the tap made of brass?
Yes, the title and listing say so: brass body, with a cross handle and a tip in the same gold shade.
Do I need a clamp for the hose?
Yes, it is recommended: it stops the hose slipping off under pressure. It is not listed in the parcel contents.
What supply is needed?
A 1/2″ female supply, i.e. 15x21.
How do I stop it seizing?
Turn the cross handle from time to time, even out of season, and rinse the tip to remove soil and limescale.
Are taps easy to install yourself?

Most of our models are designed to be easy to fit yourself, with clear instructions and standard tools. For some of the more complex models, it may be advisable to call in a professional.

What should I do if my tap starts to leak?

If your tap starts to leak, first check whether the problem comes from the seals or the cartridge. These parts can wear over time and are easy to replace. If the problem persists, contact our customer service team for help or to claim under the guarantee, if applicable.
