3-way toilet tap or bidet spray: how to choose for your toilet
26 toilet taps and bidet sprays from €14.90 to €157.90
This selection of toilet plumbing brings together 26 models: 7 three-way toilet taps from €14.90 to €24.90, 18 toilet sprays and spray kits from €24.90 to €157.90, and one bidet kit that fits on the toilet seat at €79.90. The 1/2 inch connector is listed on 13 of the 26 product pages, brass is the material given by 11 of the 26, stainless steel by 6.
All these products start from the same point: the toilet water supply, the feed pipe that fills the flush cistern. The right choice therefore depends first on this connection, then on the space around the pan.
Toilet tap, isolation valve, 3-way tap: what are we talking about?
The standard toilet tap is the isolation valve fitted on the water supply, just before the cistern. It comes as an angle valve (water arrives from the wall and leaves upwards) or a straight valve, most often with a quarter-turn control. It is used to cut the water to the cistern to change a float, a seal or the cistern mechanism, without shutting off the water to the whole home. We do not sell a stand-alone isolation valve: our toilet plumbing is the 3-way taps and the bidet sprays that connect to this same water supply.
The 3-way toilet tap takes the place of the isolation valve and gives two outlets: one to the cistern float, one to a toilet spray. A single tap and a single shut-off point for the flush and the spray.
Types of toilet isolation valves: angle or straight
Knowing which isolation valve your toilet has helps you choose the right replacement:
- The angle toilet valve: the pipe comes out of the wall, the valve turns the water 90° towards the cistern. This is the most common system on a floor-standing toilet with a cistern mounted on the pan.
- The straight valve: the inlet and outlet are on the same axis, when the pipe comes up from the floor or already arrives facing the cistern.
- The float valve: this is not an isolation valve but the mechanism inside the cistern; the float valve opens and closes the water according to the flush water level. A toilet isolation valve in good condition lets you change this mechanism without flooding the room.
The quarter-turn angle toilet valve closes with a quarter turn of the handle, which avoids forcing a seized wheel. Connectors are male or female depending on the side: note which before buying, along with the thread measurement in mm or inches. A 3-way tap keeps the same shut-off principle, with one extra outlet for the spray: the choice of an angle or straight model depends on the position of the pipe, and this choice determines the space needed behind the sanitaryware. The installation then works properly thanks to three things: a well-tightened connection, a new seal and the supply switched off during the work.
Materials and design of toilet plumbing
The product pages in the selection list brass (11 pages), stainless steel (6 pages, 3 of them 304 stainless), ABS (2 pages) and copper (1 page). Brass and stainless steel are chosen for their durability, ABS for its price: the 3-Way ABS Toilet Tap costs €14.90. As for design, the colours on offer range from chrome (14 models) to black (13 models), gold (8 models), grey, white and brushed stainless steel: so you can match the toilet tap to the other fittings in the room and the bathroom accessories.
Brass is found on other taps around the home, from the kitchen to the garden, grouped on the page brass tap, including the 3-way toilet tap.
The 3-way toilet taps in the selection
- 3-Way ABS Toilet Tap, 3-Way Toilet Tap, Black 3-way toilet tap and 3-Way Chrome Toilet Tap: €14.90.
- 3-Way Toilet Tap 1/2: €19.90, 1/2 connector as its name says.
- Brass 3-way toilet tap (€24.90) and Gold 3-way toilet tap: €29.90; the gold one comes in 1/2 or 7/8.
The 1/2 connector is listed on 5 of the 7 three-way tap product pages, brass on 4. The 3-Way Toilet Tap at €14.90 lists a different thread (M22/M24): check it on the product page before ordering.
Toilet sprays and complete kits
A toilet spray connects to the 3-way tap by a hose and sits on a wall holder next to the pan. To compare all stand-alone sprays, see our selection toilet bidet sprayer. Here, the models go from the simplest to the most complete:
- Toilet Bidet Sprayer Tap (€24.90) and Toilet Bidet Sprayer Kit (€29.90, chrome or black): the spray, its hose and its holder.
- Wall-mounted toilet bidet sprayer (€29.90) and Stainless steel toilet bidet sprayer (€39.90, black, chrome or gold).
- Toilet bidet sprayer (€67.90), Toilet tap with bidet sprayer (€94.90), Toilet bidet sprayer kit (€81.90 to €91.90, in five colours).
- Toilet bidet sprayer with no-drill holder and telescopic hose (€59.90), so you don't have to drill the tiles.
- Toilet bidet sprayer with coiled hose and wall holder (€39.90), Stainless steel toilet bidet sprayer with wall tap and full fixing kit (€44.90), Chrome toilet bidet sprayer with two-control T-valve (€62.90).
- Bidet sprayer for wall-hung toilet and Thermostatic toilet bidet sprayer (€79.90), Toilet bidet sprayer with 3-way tap and coiled hose (€79.90 to €85.90).
Toilet sprays with a wall-mounted mixer
To adjust the temperature of the spray water, you need a mixer supplied with hot and cold water: Black wall-mounted bidet sprayer with mixer and built-in holder (€69.90), Wall-mounted toilet bidet sprayer with mixer (€99.90), Wall toilet mixer tap with bidet sprayer and swivel spout (€155.90) and Gold toilet bidet sprayer with concealed wall-mounted mixer (€157.90). A mixer blends hot and cold water: it needs both supplies, not just the cistern one.
Which toilet tap should you choose?
- You only want to cut the cistern water: a standard isolation valve, angle or straight, from a plumbing specialist.
- You want to add a spray without any building work: a 3-way toilet tap at €14.90 or €19.90 plus a spray, or a complete kit.
- You want warm water: a spray with a wall-mounted mixer, from €69.90 to €157.90.
- Style: chrome, black, gold or brushed stainless steel depending on the product pages; brass is the most common material in the selection.
Our advice before any purchase, to avoid an unpleasant surprise at connection time: check that the thread of the water supply and of the float hose are compatible (the 1/2 connector is the most common in the selection), the space behind the pan, especially under a wall-hung toilet or in a boxed-in cistern, and the direction of the control so that it doesn't hit the cistern. The choice between a toilet tap and a spray comes down to use: cutting the water, or cutting the water and washing.
Installing a 3-way toilet tap
Installation is simple: turn off the main water supply, empty the cistern by flushing, unscrew the nut of the float hose, replace the old tap with the 3-way tap using a new seal, connect the float to one outlet and the spray to the other, then turn the water back on and check every connection for leaks. An adjustable spanner is usually enough. Our guide installing a toilet spray on the water supply explains every step, and the one on changing a toilet tap covers the case of the simple isolation valve.
Maintenance and leaks of a toilet tap
A toilet tap that drips at the connection often has a worn seal or a loose nut; a leak at the float comes from the cistern mechanism, not the tap. To find where the water comes from, read our guide on the leaking toilet tap, and for the right type of seal (fibre or rubber) our article which seal for a toilet tap. As for upkeep, cleaning with soapy water is enough; avoid abrasive products on chrome and black.
Frequently asked questions about the toilet tap
What height for a toilet tap?
The isolation valve goes on the water supply, at cistern height or just below, where the pipe arrives. A toilet spray is fixed within easy reach, next to the pan: our guide choosing a tap for a toilet gives the guidelines.
How much does a toilet tap cost?
In this selection, a 3-way toilet tap costs from €14.90 to €24.90, a spray from €24.90 to €85.90, a spray with a wall-mounted mixer from €69.90 to €157.90.
Who has to change the toilet water supply tap?
If you rent, tell the landlord before doing anything and check what your lease says, especially in the event of a leak or water damage.
How long does a toilet tap last?
It depends mainly on limescale and the condition of the seal. Operate the tap from time to time to check it works properly before the day you really need to cut the water.
Around the toilet
The toilet cloakroom basin tap can be changed with our bathroom taps, including basin mixer taps. If the stream of a tap splashes or goes off to one side, a new tap nozzle (aerator) often solves the problem. Are you looking for a toilet tap to cut the cistern water? The 3-way taps on this page do this job and also feed a spray.
For a gold cloakroom basin tap, see our gold taps and mixer taps, including several basin models.
