How do you choose the right size of mixer tap?

Comment choisir la taille d’un mitigeur ?

Choosing a mixer tap is not just about design or spout type. The size of the tap is crucial for comfortable use, a harmonious look and compatibility with your installation. Here are the key criteria to consider.

Tap height: a key criterion

The height of the tap directly affects how easy it is to use. With a shallow basin or sink, a tap that is too tall will splash. Conversely, one that is too low can make washing awkward. At the sink, the clearance under the spout of a kitchen mixer tap tells you what will fit underneath, saucepans included.

In our shop, our kitchen sink mixer taps come in different heights to suit every kitchen layout. For a countertop basin, choose a tall or wall-mounted mixer tap. The same rule applies in the bathroom: a basin mixer tap is chosen according to the basin, whether countertop or built-in.

Spout reach: avoiding overflow and splashes

A spout that is too short will not reach the centre of the basin, which makes it awkward to use. A spout that is too long can splash or get in your way. Ideally, the spout of the mixer tap should reach two-thirds of the way across the bowl.

Our kitchen mixer taps with pull-out spray offer great flexibility thanks to their extendable, swivelling spout.

Diameter and thread: compatibility comes first

Make sure the mixer tap is compatible with the diameter of the hole in your basin or sink (usually 35 mm) and with your water supply connections (often 3/8"). All our thermostatic mixer taps come with standard flexible connectors for easy installation. The other compatibility points for basins are covered in our article: does a tap fit every basin?.

Sink, basin or bath mixer tap: different sizes

  • Basin mixer tap: more compact, ideal for small basins.
  • Kitchen sink mixer tap: taller and with a longer reach, often with a pull-out spray.
  • Wall-mounted mixer tap: no clutter on the worktop, to be chosen according to the height of the water point.

Key points before you buy

  • Measure the depth of your basin or sink.
  • Choose a spout height that suits the way you use it.
  • Check the diameter of the hole and the type of connections.
  • Match the style of the mixer tap to the rest of your taps and fittings.

By choosing a mixer tap of the right size, you combine good looks, comfort and function, and avoid nasty surprises when fitting it. For the rest of your bathroom choices (style, finish, type of fitting), see our guide to choosing a bathroom tap.
