Do all bathroom taps fit all basins?

Est-ce que tous les robinets de salle de bain s’adaptent à tous les lavabos ?

Choosing a bathroom tap is about more than looks. Compatibility with your basin is essential if you want an installation without nasty surprises. So, does every tap fit every basin? Not quite. Here is what you need to know before you choose.

The type of installation: the first thing to check

There are two main families of bathroom taps: deck-mounted models that sit on the basin and wall-mounted ones. If you go for a standard basin tap, make sure your basin has one or more suitable tap holes. A wall-mounted tap, on the other hand, needs a water supply built into the wall, which can mean extra work if it has not been planned.

Spout height: watch out for splashing

A spout that is too high above the basin can splash every time you use it. A spout that is too low, on the other hand, can be awkward to use. Match the height of the tap to the depth of your basin. Our tall basin taps are designed to pair perfectly with countertop basins and deep washbasins.

The number of tap holes in the basin

Some basins have a single hole for a mixer tap, while others have three to take a tap with separate handles. If your basin has three holes, you will need a 3-hole basin mixer or a model that works with cover plates. Conversely, a deck-mounted tap will not suit a basin with no tap hole.

The size of the connection thread

Most taps sold in Europe use a standard thread (often 3/8"), but it is best to check your water supply connections. Our bathroom taps come with compatible flexible connectors and adaptors if needed. For fitting, follow our guide to changing a basin tap.

Matching the style of your bathroom

Finally, even if it is not a technical criterion, style matters! A modern tap can look out of place in a traditional bathroom. Match the design, finish and spout shape to the rest of your furniture. You can browse our full range of bathroom taps to find the ideal model.

A few checks to make before you buy

  • Check which type of fitting suits your basin (deck-mounted, wall-mounted, etc.)
  • Count the tap holes in your basin
  • Measure the height and depth of the basin
  • Make sure the connections are compatible

With these points in mind, you can choose a tap that is attractive, practical and perfectly suited to your basin. For the small hand basin in the toilet, see also which tap to choose for a toilet hand basin.
