How a thermostatic works

How a thermostatic works

With a standard mixer, you look for the right temperature by hand, and it shifts as soon as a toilet flush or a dishwasher draws on the mains. A thermostatic mixer contains a cartridge that adjusts the hot-cold mix to hold the chosen temperature.

This bar carries its two controls at the ends, one for temperature, the other for opening the water. You set your temperature once, then open and close without starting over at every shower. It is a comfort appreciated in a home with children, where water that suddenly heats up is quickly a shock.

A bar made for a column

A bar made for a column

In the in-situ photos, a square tube rises from the top of the bar to the shower column, and a hose runs down from underneath to the hand shower. The diagram shows two threads, G3/4 and G1/2, and a length of 255 mm.

It is therefore the piece to choose to equip or replace the mixer of an existing shower column, or to complete a column sold without a mixer. Check the thread of the tube on your column that connects to it before ordering.

The water supplies connect at the back, on nut fittings; a red mark indicates the hot side.

Exposed installation, chrome or black

Exposed installation, chrome or black

The supplier's text talks about a concealed mixer, but the photos show an exposed bar, screwed onto two supplies coming out of the wall. It is an installation with no chasing, provided your water outlets are already there.

The chrome version goes with a stainless or chrome column, the matt black with a black column or a shower screen with dark profiles. Its body is stated to be brass by the supplier. As limescale is the enemy of thermostatic cartridges, descaling from time to time keeps the regulation accurate. Your order is shipped within 24 h.

What makes the difference

Receiving just the one part, and having to order the rest elsewhere.

  • 1 thermostatic bar mixer

A zamak body with a simple chrome plating: the finish flakes off and the metal pits underneath.

Our answer

A brass body, the benchmark material for taps: it does not rust and withstands hot water without warping.

Finding out at installation that the drilling does not match.

Our answer

The installation type is stated on the product page before you buy, here 2 holes.

Can I fit it to my existing shower column?
If your shower column connects to the top of a bar mixer, yes; compare the threads (G3/4 and G1/2 on the diagram) before ordering.
Do I have to knock through the wall?
No: despite the supplier's description, the bar is surface-mounted and screws onto existing water supplies.
How is it different from a standard mixer tap?
You set the temperature once and the cartridge then holds it, with no fiddling about.
Black or chrome, same model?
Yes, the same 255 mm bar; only the finish changes.
Are taps easy to install yourself?

Most of our models are designed to be easy to fit yourself, with clear instructions and standard tools. For some of the more complex models, it may be advisable to call in a professional.

What should I do if my tap starts to leak?

If your tap starts to leak, first check whether the problem comes from the seals or the cartridge. These parts can wear over time and are easy to replace. If the problem persists, contact our customer service team for help or to claim under the guarantee, if applicable.
