A thermostatic mixer holds the temperature despite variations in mains pressure. It cuts the water if the cold supply fails: this is real protection, especially with children.

The stop is set once and for all at installation. Check the pressure before buying: below 1.5 bar, a thermostatic mixer regulates poorly.

On a shower installation, maintenance comes down to limescale. A descaled hose and clear nozzles restore the original pressure — this is almost always where the impression of a weakening shower comes from.
