Where to put it

Where to put it

The photos show it under a shower arm, between the arm and the shower head, and under a wall-mounted mixer, to connect a handset hose.

In every case the principle is the same: water enters through the top nut and leaves through two outlets, one in line, the other on the side. The lever directs the water.

In a toilet, it can be fitted on a 1/2″ (15x21) pipe to supply a sprayer. On a 3/8″ (12x17) supply, a reducing bush makes the link.

What's inside

What's inside

The annotated diagram details its construction: a water inlet with a female interface, two water outlets, a ceramic cartridge and a two-position setting.

The ceramic cartridge is the system found in most modern taps: it operates effortlessly.

The body, stated as brass, has an electroplated chrome finish with a mirror shine. The slim lever, perpendicular to the body, is easy to spot at a glance: you can see straight away which way the water goes. Its hexagonal nut is tightened with a flat spanner; put a cloth in between so as not to mark the chrome.

Installation and care

Installation and care

Turn off the water, unscrew the existing part, screw the branch on by its female nut, then connect the shower head or hose to the male outlets.

When a handset is connected to the side outlet, flip the lever to the other outlet when you have finished: it will stay without water until next time.

To keep the chrome shiny: soft cloth, soapy water, and white vinegar for limescale. No abrasive products. Then reopen the water slowly and check each connection; a turn of PTFE tape on the male threads helps the seal.

What makes the difference

Receiving just the one part, and having to order the rest elsewhere.

Our answer
  • 1 1/2″ 3-way diverter tap

A zamak body with a simple chrome plating: the finish flakes off and the metal pits underneath.

Our answer

A brass body, the benchmark material for taps: it does not rust and withstands hot water without warping.
