Why replace a basin tap?

Over time, taps can scale up, seize or leak. Replacing one not only restores smooth everyday use, it also freshens up your bathroom. You can also take the opportunity to cut your water consumption by adding a brass water-saving tap aerator.

Steps to change a basin tap

Step 1: Turn off the water supply

Before you start, find the isolation valves under the basin and close them fully. Open the tap to drain the remaining water and avoid any overflow during the job.

Step 2: Remove the old tap

Reach the fixings

Under the basin, find the fixing nuts that hold the tap in place. You will need an adjustable spanner or an open-ended spanner to undo them.

Disconnect the hoses

Once the fixings are off, disconnect the hot and cold supply hoses. You can now remove the old tap completely.

Step 3: Prepare the new tap

Clean the surface

Take the opportunity to clean the surface thoroughly around the basin hole to avoid any residue that could affect the seal.

Position the seals

Place the seals supplied with the new tap according to the manufacturer's instructions. They ensure a perfect seal between the tap and the basin. If the new tap does not have the same number of holes as the old one, see whether every tap fits every basin.

Step 4: Fit the new tap

Insert the new tap into the hole provided. From underneath, screw on the fixing system until it is firmly in place. Then connect the supply hoses to the water supplies.

Step 5: Turn the water back on and test the installation

Reopen the isolation valves, then check the tap works properly. Make sure there are no leaks at the connections and that the water flows smoothly.

Which tap should you choose for your basin?

The choice of tap depends on your needs and the style of your bathroom. A traditional tap with two controls is simple, but a mixer tap offers more everyday comfort.
