The charm of cross handles

The charm of cross handles

Cross handles with four arms ending in a ball used to fit our grandparents’ taps. You grasp them with your whole hand, even wet, and they turn without slipping. This tap has two: one on top, the other on the side.

The brass is brushed, in an aged shade without shine. The photos show it as readily above a bathroom basin as at the end of a garden hose: it suits an old house, a longère or a paved courtyard. It readily replaces a worn old courtyard tap, without betraying the style of the façade.

A spout and a hose outlet

A spout and a hose outlet

Each cross handle controls its own outlet. The spout, at the front, runs freely: it fills a watering can or a bucket. The manufacturer supplies an aerator, which softens the jet. Under the body, a second outlet with a nozzle takes a garden hose.

Both can run at the same time, as in the photo where the two jets fall side by side. It closes with a ball valve and a ceramic core, according to the manufacturer. In practice, the spout is for the bucket or watering can, the low outlet for the garden hose wound on its reel, which no longer needs to be disconnected between uses.

Fitting on a G1/2 outlet

Fitting on a G1/2 outlet

The tap measures 12.2 cm high and 11 cm wide. Its inlet is threaded G1/2, i.e. 15x21, the most common wall outlet.

A decorative flange and a PTFE tape roll are included; the manufacturer states that their model and colour are sent at random. Wind the tape in the direction of screwing and tighten until the top cross handle is straight. In winter, turn off the supply and open both cross handles to empty the brass. UK delivery is free.

What makes the difference

A single lever you never quite get right.

Our answer

Two separate handles: hot and cold are set independently, right down to the degree.

Draining the tap every autumn and still finding it split in spring.

Our answer

A valve that closes upstream of the wall: no water is left standing in the part exposed to frost.

A smooth nozzle that no hose connector will grip.

Our answer

A threaded nozzle to the standard used by off-the-shelf quick connectors.

A thin handwheel that's impossible to turn in wet gloves.

Our answer

A quarter-turn opening, on a wide control.

Paint that blisters in the first summer.

Our answer

A material made for outdoors: sun, rain and frost make no difference.

Will the flange match?
It is included, but the manufacturer states that its model and colour are random.
Can it be installed indoors?
Yes: the photos show it above a basin as well as in the garden. It needs a G1/2 wall outlet.
What is the aerator for?
It sits at the end of the spout and makes the jet softer, without splashing.
How do I care for brushed brass?
A soft cloth and soapy water; no abrasive product, which would mark the brushing.
Are taps easy to install yourself?

Most of our models are designed to be easy to fit yourself, with clear instructions and standard tools. For some of the more complex models, it may be advisable to call in a professional.

What should I do if my tap starts to leak?

If your tap starts to leak, first check whether the problem comes from the seals or the cartridge. These parts can wear over time and are easy to replace. If the problem persists, contact our customer service team for help or to claim under the guarantee, if applicable.
