Replacing a kitchen tap is within everyone's reach, provided you have the right tools and follow the steps in order. Whether you want to modernise your kitchen, fix a leak or simply switch to a more practical model, here is how to change your tap easily and safely.
Why change your kitchen tap?
A faulty or ageing tap
Over time, taps can leak, seize up or lose flow. Replacing one brings back optimum comfort, especially with a modern sink tap.
Wanting to update the kitchen
Changing the tap is a simple way to freshen up your sink without major work. A contemporary-design kitchen tap can transform the feel of the room.
A practical need
A fold-down tap or one with a pull-out spray can meet specific needs depending on how you use your kitchen. These models are perfect for small spaces or heavy use.
The equipment you need
The essential tools
An adjustable spanner
A screwdriver
PTFE tape (Teflon type)
A washing-up bowl or bucket
The new tap
Choose a model that is compatible with your sink and your needs:
If you want more manoeuvrability, opt for a kitchen tap with pull-out spray. If your sink is under a window, consider a fold-down kitchen tap that folds away easily. For a more professional or wall-mounted look, you can also consider a wall-mounted kitchen tap.
Steps to replace a kitchen tap
1. Turn off the water and prepare the area
Close the hot and cold supplies under the sink. Open the tap to drain the pipework. Place a bowl under the hoses to catch any remaining water.
2. Remove the old tap
Undo the tap's fixing nuts under the sink with the adjustable spanner. Disconnect the hoses and lift the tap out from above. This is a good time to clean the area around the old tap hole.
3. Fit the new tap
Attach the new hoses to the tap, then insert it into the sink hole. Screw on the retaining nut from underneath. Tighten firmly to make sure it is held securely.
4. Connect the hoses and test
Connect the hoses to the water supplies. Remember to add PTFE tape if the connections need it. Turn the water on gradually and test the tap while running. Check there are no leaks.
Extra tips for a successful installation
Think about water pressure
Make sure your tap is compatible with the pressure of your system. Some models, such as those with a pull-out spray or even wall-mounted ones, may need a minimum pressure to work at their best.
Choose durable materials
Chrome-plated brass, brushed stainless steel and ceramic cartridges are signs of toughness. At Robineto you will find a wide choice of kitchen taps built to last.
Make upkeep easier
Some models include an anti-limescale aerator or a smudge-resistant finish for quicker everyday cleaning. These details make a difference in use, especially if your water is hard.
